Dutch businessman — and EXTREME music fan — Theo "Boogieman" Dasbach had a lifelong plan. Upon
his retirement from a career that moved him from The Netherlands to New York City, he would settle in
Memphis, TN, and bring his Holland-based hobby, the Rock 'N Roll Museum, with him. Then, he made a
fateful pilgrimage to Clarksdale, MS — not the sleepy ghosttown he'd visited years before but the re-
energized blues mecca of modern times. Shifting plans dramatically, he looked at a vintage downtown
property and then next day put money down on what would soon become Clarksdale's fabulous Rock &
Blues Museum.

Reverend Robert is known for his genuine conviction and honest delivery. His passion for
the blues led him to the prewar blues style of Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, and other
delta blues giants.
Having immersed himself in their recordings, Reverend Robert emerged with an authentic
feeling for the blues that is matched by his easy-going and artistic personality. Reverend
Robert’s tasteful slide guitar playing garnered the attention of the National Slide Guitar
Festival in North Carolina where he took first place in their competition in 2004.
He has entertained audiences throughout the United States, Canada, the U.K., Europe,
and India. In the past two decades he has developed his one-man blues show to
incorporate the influences of jazz, ragtime, and swing, as well as Caribbean, Hawaiian,
African and Indian music.
The perfect combination of tradition and creative innovation, the Reverend’s music is at
home on festival stages or in the street, in clubs or in the backyard. Its dance music played
with a stomping beat
and irresistible groove.

Joe Batterton and Mark Edwards are an acoustic blues duo from North Central Arkansas. Their
sound is centered around the acoustic Delta Blues of the Arkansas and Mississippi Delta. Even

Hurt to Doc Watson which has allowed them to develop their own spin on the country blues.
They recently won the Blues Challenge with the Ozark Blues Society of Northwest Arkansas.

I was born & raised in the South of France and at an early age I knew that I wanted to
be in America fullfilling my dreams of being a professional musician. I made the big
leap in the spring of 2001 and moved to Hollywood, CA with nothing but a guitar, a
change of clothes and $200 in my pocket. Call it luck or fate but 3 weeks into my stay
in the City of Angels I ran into Shooter Jennings and promptly joined his band
Stargunn. The first two years in California saw my dreams coming true by meeting
and playing with some of my childhood heroes (Waylon Jennings, Slash, Tom Morello
and James Hetfield to name a few…) Since my early American beginnings, I’ve
played guitar for the likes of Stoney LaRue, Billy Joe Shaver and Jack Ingram as band
leader! In the past few years, I’ve expended my craft to singing, writing, recording &
performing my own music both as Frenchie’s Blues Destroyers and more recently as
Guitar Frenchie. To pursue my career as a solo artist, I’ve moved full time to
Clarksdale, MS arguably the home of the Blues to continue pushing my boundaries,
recognizing and respecting the tradition of the birthplace of America’s music!

Ryan Lee Crosby blends echoes of Mississippi, Mali, and India into songs that speak from—and to—the heart.
Produced by Fat Possum's Bruce Watson, Crosby's latest "Winter Hill Blues" evokes the essence of Mississippi, refracted by influences of Indian slide guitar. The sound is forged from his life as a traveling musician and studies with Jimmy "Duck" Holmes and RL Boyce.
“Of all traditions, what speaks to me most is the Bentonia blues,” Crosby relates. "It expresses all emotions: joy, sorrow and everything in between. The blues shows us how to have compassion for ourselves and others. Its lessons are endless.”

Red's Lounge? It's the definition of a real-deal Mississippi juke joint. Don't expect to be spoiled with amenities. All you need is a been-there-done-that owner, some beers as big as your head and some "live" blues you'll never forget. (Oh, and MAYBE something out front on the grill.) This is how blues became blues... how the music grew up out of the cotton fields and onto a round piece of vinyl. Speaking of which, the building itself was called "Levine's Music Center" back in the day, and it's where Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm bought the instruments that played the first rock 'n roll song. Yeah, Red's is the real thing for sure...

and play deep groove, blues-based rock'n'roll. John Krupa cut his teeth playing punk rock
in Connecticut and Minneapolis, MN in the '90s and since then he's lived on the west coast
and continued his journey into the deep south where the roots of American music–
rock'n'roll, blues, and soul continue to influence and guide his sound. While focussing on
writing and recording his original songs, he is not ashamed to wear his influences on his
sleeves– Rolling Stones, Johnny Winter, The Faces, Allman Brothers Band, North
Mississippi Hill Country Blues, Stax records style soul, Tony Joe White, Black Crowes, as
well as proto-punk and garage bands like The Stooges, The Clash, MC5 and The Sonics.
The sound that comes out is a product of the experiences lived.

In 1941 Alan Lomax recorded Muddy Waters at Stovall Plantation outside of Clarksdale. These and other recordings of great Delta artists have been a source of both celebration and controversy, as Lomax copyrighted the recordings in his name. Chandra Williams, Executive Director of Crossroads Cultural Arts Center (CCAC) and Anna Lomax Woods, founder of the Association for Cultural Equity (ACE) and daughter of Alan Lomax, discuss community-driven return of the Delta recordings of the Alan Lomax collection to descendents and communities of origin.

Some chairs will be available. This Italian style villa was completed in 1916. Named Belvoir by the Cutrer family, this house and the family who lived there inspired character names and settings in several works by celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams. For more information, contact Jen Waller at 662-645-3555 or jwaller@coahomacc.edu
×Where: Cutrer Mansion
The mansion was built in 1916 by Memphis architect Bayard Cairnes for Clarksdale attorney J.W. Cutrer and his wife Blanche Clark Cutrer, daughter of Clarksdale’s founder, John Clark. The dapper Jack Cutrer was very flamboyant and equally famous for his legendary parties and fiery politics. Not to be outdone, Blanche often threw extravagant yard parties and opulent masked balls, usually to the accompaniment of a full orchestra or swing band. Such events often attracted a young Tom Williams, who later became the celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams, to the Cutrer home as a child. Williams most likely came to the Cutrer Mansion on parish calls with his beloved grandfather, Rev. Walter Dakin. The Cutrers and their home, which they called Belvoir, inspired character names and settings in several of Tennessee Williams’ plays including A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, Orpheus Descending and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
Who: Shake Down
Hopson Courtyard, Crawfish Boil with live music by Joe Austin & The Tallahatchies, 3-6 pm
×Who: Joe Austin & The Tallahatchies
Born and raised in Pontotoc, Mississippi, just a stone’s throw from the Mississippi Delta, Joe Austin was immersed in
American music at an early age. His childhood was filled with blues, gospel harmonies in church and “front porch pickin’”
amongst gatherings of family and friends. His grandfather was a finger style guitar player on his off time from being one of
the first crop duster pilots in the state. Growing up, Joe was mesmerized watching his grandad play and learned to sing
along. His grandad passed away and left his guitar to Joe. That’s when he learned to play guitar like he’d always wanted to.
A few years later he also learned fiddle and really began to find his niche. After high school, he attended college on a music
scholarship and played in a country music ensemble. After college, he played professionally based out of Nashville and
Memphis. However, the Texas music scene had always appealed to him. In November 2014 he got the opportunity to move
to north Texas where he produced a record on singer songwriter Tom McElvain titled “Redemption”.
Who: Carlos Elliot, Bobby Gentilo, Eduardo Oviedo
Carlos Elliot, a Colombian band, pioneers Hill Country Blues in Latin America. Influenced by Mississippi Delta
legends like James T-Model Ford, Big Jack Johnson, and RL Boyce, their unique blend of blues, rock, funk, soul,
and ancestral rhythms has captivated audiences worldwide. Their music bridges cultures, generations, and
continents, exploring universal themes of love, struggle, and hope.
Who: Dwayne Burnside
Duwayne has been immersed in music since birth, as the sound of his father and
friends’ playing regularly filled the Burnside household. At 12, he began to play drums,
occasionally supporting R.L. and performing in the bands at Junior Kimbrough’s juke
joint in the fields outside of Holly Springs. By age 14, he’d switched to guitar and
became a member of his father’s band just in time for the recording of Sound Machine
Groove. At 15, he moved to Memphis to make his own way in the dynamic and vital
blues scene that sprawls from the Bluff City to Mississippi’s hills and Delta. He
ricocheted between Memphis and the Holly Springs area in subsequent decades,
settling in his hometown once again in the early 2000s. Duwayne has also
supplemented his career as a guitarist, singer, and bassist by operating a series of
juke joints in Memphis, Chulahoma, and Holly Springs. Just this spring he opened the
latest: the Burnside Bar and Grill at 645 North Highway 7 in Holly Springs.
Who: Robert Kimbrough Sr.
Robert Kimbrough Sr continues the Cotton Patch Soul Blues style created by his father, the legendary Junior
Kimbrough. From an early age, Robert was steeped in the sounds and life of North Mississippi and its distinctive
style of blues. Growing up, Robert listened, first-hand to Mississippi blues royalty that played with his father at
home, at Junior’s Juke Joint Club, and the ever frequent weekend house party and porch jam session. The blues
was simply part of everyday life as a Kimbrough. Robert continues his father’s musical tradition, along with some
of his siblings. You can often find many of them sharing the stage on any given night in Mississippi. The
Kimbrough name, along with the Burnside name, is part of a blues dynasty that remains strong today, bringing
people from all over the world to see and hear them play.
The Cotton Patch Soul Blues style that Robert plays is a straight link to the music that his father originated in
North Mississippi. It is a deep soul sound that can be linked back to his ancestors coming from the cotton fields,
singing and ‘hollering‘ as they worked in the tall rows of Mississippi cotton. This distinct and somewhat
underground style of blues is rooted in hypnotic, rhythms and dance-able grooves. The Black Keys released an
entire album in 2006 of Junior Kimbrough cover songs called Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough. Up
until the mid 80s, the only way to hear this music was to visit a church-turned-blues-den founded by Junior
Kimbrough in Chulahoma, MS that unfortunately burned down in 2000.

Studio 305 is also home to the Clarksdale Reels old-school recording studio, run by blues musician Randy "19th Street Red" Cohen.
Who: Ghalia Volt
Ghalia Volt is a force of nature who comes to Juke Joint Festival from New Orleans but originally hails from Belgium, where the blues bug bit early. After multiple visits to Mississippi and the American South in search of real-deal blues and roots musics, she moved here to join the scene. This year, she'll be featured as her amazing one-woman-blues-band. Be sure to ask about her latest CD and LP releases after her shows!
